The Fight for Freedom rages on ...

The Myanmar military coup in 1964 lasted 26 years, because its citizens were afraid to stand up to the powerful junta. After a few years of peace, in 2021 the heartless military once again began a campaign of terrorism. But this time the citizens of Myanmar, young and old, rich and poor, are standing up to the fight. The Art For Freedom (AFF) exhibit aims to increase international awareness of this momentous grassroots insurgence. It is also about showcasing the diverse work of Myanmar creative activists. Their art was used with permission, and with agreed upon anonymity for most. Sadly, the costs have been high in this deadly fight for freedom. Currently many of the AFF artists are imprisoned, in hiding or killed. According to the United Nations Human Rights Council, as of May 2024, there are 18.6 million people needing urgent assistance in Myanmar, amid spiralling atrocities and countrywide economic and infrastructure collapse. An estimated 10,000 children under age five have died of malnutrition, and 2.4 million people have fled to the jungles and neighbouring communities. We continue to advocate for the people of Myanmar. Upon completion of the Kelowna exhibit, the Art For Freedom art panels, mounted on recycled metal signs, were donated to the Myanmar Students Coalition of British Columbia, who are leading peaceful protests in BC's Lower Mainland. In 2025 the AFF exhibit will join another powerful exhibit in Buffalo, New York, where over 30,000 Myanmar people live, the largest Burmese refugee settlement in North America. Stay tuned. Please let us know your thoughts regarding Art For Freedom. The panels were designed by Hanna Miller.
